Hemodialysis is a process of purifying the blood of a person whose kidneys are not working normally from metabolism waste using hemodialyzer equipment. This usually happens when patients have only 10 to 15 percent of kidney function left. Patient may have symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, swelling, and fatigue.

Awal Bros Hospital Hemodialysis unit is always available to help patients, 24 hours a day. This facility is supported by the team that consists of HD certified general practice doctors, internist doctors, nephrology doctors and competent, skillful, and certified nurses.

Hemodialysis Treatment Process

Each hemodialysis treatment normally takes four to five hours. Usually, a patient needs three treatments a week.  Our doctor will prescribe how long patient treatments will be, usually between 3 to hours, but most common is 4 hours. However, certain patients may need more frequent treatments or longer treatments. Sometimes shorter treatments are sufficient.

During treatment, two needles will be inserted into the vascular access, one to remove the blood and the other to return cleansed blood to the body. Patients need to clean the skin covering the access before inserting the needles to avoid infection. If any signs of infection are noticed, inform the nurse immediately. The patients need to make sure that their blood is flowing and not clotting while on treatment. Our medical will make sure patients are as comfortable as possible during treatment.

Is There A Special Diet?

Most patients on hemodialysis need to adjust their diet. Patients on hemodialysis are advised to increase their protein intake and limit the amount of potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and fluid in their diet. One of the major restrictions that patients may find difficult is fluid intake. In the early stages of hemodialysis, patients may still pass some urine but, as time progresses the volume will decrease. Urine measurements will be made from time to time to assess fluid allowance. Patients with diabetes or other health conditions may have additional diet restrictions. It’s important to talk with a dietitian about patients’ individual diet needs.
